It’s considered to be one of the most widely available and popular video games of all time, but there’s a good reason why this copy of Super Mario Bros. cost so much.
The classic game was often bundled with the console, which means over 40 million copies of Super Mario Bros. for the NES have been sold worldwide. Which in theory makes it one of the easiest, and therefore cheapest, retro games to get hold of.
But this one in particular went for so much on eBay for two main reasons: it’s still sealed in its original cellophane wrapping and it’s one of the first editions of the game ever made.
You can tell that because of the tab at the back that lets you hang it on a peg, which the later boxes didn’t have.
The most expensive NES game is considered to be by many; Stadium Events, which was only available in shops for a short time before being pulled. A mint copy once sold for $100,099.99 (£76,500) when it turned up a few years ago. Ludicrous amount of money if you ask me.
